ACHA publication: Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of People with Dementia in Acute Hospital Settings: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

This study was a literature review and meta-analysis looking at how common it was for older people with dementia admitted to hospital to present with behaviours which could impact on the care they receive.

It pulled together data from 23 research studies showing that around 60% of older people presenting to hospital have behavioural symptoms, with the most common symptoms being aggression and agitation, sleep problems, eating problems and irritability. We know that these types of behaviours can act as a barrier to care but we also know that effective staff training can go a long way to mitigate their impact and to help hospital patients with dementia receive care that better suits their needs.

These findings are important to help those running hospitals plan staff training, but also to put in place measures to identify and respond to the needs of patients living with dementia.
