This study, conducted by a team from the University of Lincoln, working with Prof Adam Gordon at ACHA, interviewed frontline ambulance staff who had attended care homes in England as part of their routine work.
It identified complex decision making and negotiations around transfer to hospital when a person living in a care home becomes ill. Discussions involve the resident, their family, care home staff ambulance staff and sometimes medical professionals like GPs.
Ambulance staff stated a preference to provide as much care as possible, in situ, in the care home and identified the importance of proactive discussions about what residents and families would want in an emergency as a way of helping ambulance staff make the right decisions.
This work is important as ambulance services and integrated care systems around the country look to find better, more proactive ways, of supporting care home residents and their families during emergencies.
