Addressing local ageing priorities with our first PhD programme

Applications are now open for the Academic Centre for Healthy Ageing’s first PhD programme ‘FAIRER’.

By listening to our local partners, patients and community about their ideas, concerns, and aspirations for healthy ageing, we identified key priorities to inform the PhD research topics. Involving local people is fundamental to ACHA, ensuring our research is community-focused and addresses local needs.

We are offering three fully-funded non-clinical PhD studentships, registered at Queen Mary University of London, supported by Barts Charity and the Dunhill Medical Trust.

Local health and care staff of all backgrounds who want to add research into their career are encouraged to apply, particularly those in roles less traditionally associated with research like nurses, allied health professionals, health visitors, ambulance staff, or care home workers.

Althea Bart, Head of Community Participation at Whipps Cross Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust, said:

“It’s exciting to see that ACHA is already listening to the local community and using our feedback to directly influence their research.”

Steph Taylor, Professor of Public Health and Primary Care at the Wolfson Institute of Population Health, Queen Mary said:

“This is a fantastic opportunity for any health and care professional who wants to integrate research into their career. With support from Queen Mary and Barts Health, ACHA is enabling the local workforce to get involved in research in healthy ageing, supporting their professional development and improving the care of patients and the health of our local population.”
