Improving Care in North East London

People in North East London are living longer than ever before. While this is a great achievement, it also means more people require long-term care and support—often for complex health needs.

Despite this growing demand, older adults are not always included in research. As a result, we don’t always have the right evidence to improve care in ways that truly reflect their needs and experiences.

At the same time, care providers, such as care homes across the UK, are under increasing pressure. More residents need support, staffing levels are stretched, and demands on services continue to rise. Too often, research and improvement initiatives are developed without sufficient input from the people who live and work in care homes—meaning solutions may not always work well in day-to-day practice.

Introducing NEL-CIRCLE

To address this challenge, ACHA has launched NEL-CIRCLE (North East London Care Innovation & Research Collaborative for Learning Equity).

NEL-CIRCLE works in close partnership with care providers, including Cambridge Nursing Home and Care Providers Voice (CPV), alongside:

  • Residents and families
  • Care home staff
  • Researchers and healthcare professionals

Together, we design and test better ways to improve care that are grounded in real-life experience.

How It Works

Using a Living Lab approach, NEL-CIRCLE:

  • Tests ideas in real care settings
  • Learns quickly what works
  • Combines research with day-to-day practice
  • Collaborates closely with frontline care providers and sector partners

Why It Matters

  • Better quality of life for residents
  • More responsive care services
  • Stronger, better-trained workforce
  • Fairer care for diverse communities
  • Solutions shaped by care homes and sector organisations
