Older people make up the majority of health service users and most doctors, regardless of their discipline, therefore need to have skills to help them diagnose and manage older people living with frailty.
The British Geriatrics Society National Survey of Teaching in Ageing and Geriatric Medicine was started by ACHA Professor, Adam Gordon, in 2008 as part of efforts to establish core standards of undergraduate teaching around ageing. Now in its third iteration the study shows substantial progress in how ageing is taught across the UK, with increased focus on clinically-oriented small group teaching. Gaps were, however, noted about how we teach holistic and community-based topics. Renewed focus is needed here.
This work forms part of ongoing campaigning by the British Geriatrics Society to improve the standards of education around care of older people and ACHA plans to continue to support this work going forward. You can read the article in full here.
