ACHA publication: AI and machine learning for detection and management of delirium in care home residents

Delirium describes a fast-onset type of confusion which can affect your ability to think, your alertness and awareness of surroundings.  It can result in agitated behaviour or drowsiness and withdrawal.  It is important to detect early because it often indicates a serious underlying medical condition which needs to be treated.  But it can be difficult to detect in older people, particularly those with dementia, many of whom live in care homes.

This article lays out how artificial intelligence and computer vision could be combined to identify and trigger responses early in the course of delirium for older people living in care homes.  It considers the opportunities and challenges with such approaches and makes some suggestions for research and development going forward.
