This editorial, written for the Age and Ageing journal discusses the progress made since geriatric medicine was founded in the UK, some 75 years ago by the pioneering doctor Marjory Warren.
It focusses upon hospital-associated functional decline – a deterioration in physical capabilities experienced during hospital admissions and concludes that we’re missing many opportunities to make this a thing of the past for older people living with frailty.
It describes solutions, including an increased focus on early mobilisation in hospitals, an investment in exercise therapists, and a focus on building rehabilitation teams in the community.
